Operational cost example:
Assumptions: 50 Users with 2TB of Shared drives and 50GB of personal storage in their accounts.
If the company data are mostly documents then a cloud VM + 5TB storage, if the data is mostly large media or engineering then an on-premises NAS / SAN with large storage pool (10 to 20TB) would be cheaper on the long run (like QNAP, Synology or TrueNAS servers).
A cloud hosted would cost annually:
– Hetzner server + 5 TB storage box @ US$ 60 / month = US$ 720 / year
– Nextcloud licensing (optional & depending on the operation urgency)
– NAS servers costs like US$ 3,000 to US$ 5,000 with 10 to 20 TB of storage for 3 to 5 years of service.
– Static Public IP address if will share files or establish Talk calls with outside parties.
Note: usage of internal Email service may increase the support hours, it’s always recommended to use a secure email provider service like MailFence, Proton Mail.
